Porn 2.0

Porn 2.0 refers to pornographic websites featuring user generated content. Porn 2.0 is named after web 2.0. Porn 2.0 websites may include social networking media including features such as user based categorizing, webcam hosting, blogs and comments. This is in contrast to the static content offered by “Web 1.0” porn sites.

Porn 2.0 websites offer features that are similar to mainstream Web 2.0 services such as video streaming community websites like YouTube, Metacafe, Vimeo, Dailymotion and social websites such as Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr or general blodding websites such as Blogger, DailyBooth, Lookbook and picture hosting websites such as Flickr, Photobucked, Picasa, Imgur.

Porn 2.0 websites have gained massive popularity since their inception, but in the meanwhile have encountered various legal issues and other difficulties. Among these legal issues are concerns about copyright infringement, trade media and affiliate partnership advertising. Other concerns are the idea of sharing vs privacy in security 2.0 and legal ramifications or large amounts of free, user generated content regarding pornography on the internet. To temporarily solve these issues, a zero-dollar charge credit card verification method was implemented in MaxPorn abd RTA & age verification consent in PornoTube respectively.

News media often suggest for Porn 3.0 the usage of 3D stereoscopy, multi-angle DVD neural impulse actuators, and peripheral controller and devices similar to game controller vibration, eliminating less probable technologies such as holograms.

Challenges

While pornographic websites are a natural development for an industry that has always been the forefront of tech, some argue that Porn 2.0 has presented several challenges and difficulties.

One of the biggest challenges that have confronted Porn 2.0 is copyright infringement. Porn 2.0 websites have been widely criticized as being potentially harmful to the economics of the traditional pornography outlets such as DVD sales and subscription sites.

“As more and more of the general public comes online, they are finding newer and cheaper ways to get their adult content fix. Just like the masses have flocked to sites like YouTube to watch professional clips from their favorite TV shows, video blogs, crazy stunts, and amateur movies, the adult audience has ditched DVDs and pay-per-view television to flock to similar sites (like xTube).” — Jacqui Cheng, ArsTechnica.com

Any website that allows users to upload content such as for example similar to YouTube are risking copyright infringement. While at the inception of Web 2.0 movement this was a grey issue, in 2007 a billion dollar lawsuit filed by Viacom against YouTube will bring this problem before the courts and will have a massive potential effect on the viability of Porn 2.0 as a business strategy. YouTube has since won the suit.

A decision that was made in 2007, by the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals found that the 2257 legislation (Child Protection and Obscenity Enforcement Act) was unconstitutional and was violating first amendment rights. In 2009 the decision was overtuned in an en banc (In law, an en banc session (French for “in bench”) is a session in which a case is heard before all the judges of a court (before the entire bench) rather than by a panel of judges selected from them) rehearing. The U.S. supreme court declined to hear the matter.

Privacy

Sometimes (more frequently than desired) users upload content without a model hir or her permission. This happens very often when users who are active on webcam sites, record a show of a webcam model and then upload it to a pornographic video sharing site. Most pornographic video sharing websites prohibit uploading of such content in their terms and services, although some websites such as Voyeurweb allow non-consensual pictures and or videos and move offices frequently to avoid legal issues. There are also websites to be found on the internet that are fully dedicated to user submitted content of cam models. These website usually almost never comply with DMCA takedowns.

Monetization

Porn 2.0 unlike Web 2.0 websites such as Myspace, YouTube or Facebook have yet to find a strategy that proves to be commercially profitable. Porn 2.0 websites are in a challenging financial position because of high server costs from hosting a large amount of user-generated content paired with little to no user-generated content income. The main source and sometimes even the only source of revenue is advertisement placement, which is the reason Porn 2.0 services have, so far, been free of charge of users.

Serviced

Porn 2.0 image sites

Most Porn 2.0 websites that exist present day offer a majority of free promotional and user-generated content. A popular Porn 2.0 image site called Sex.com is a Pinterest clone, which works the same was as other social media websites except that they are specialized in pornographic content. Other social media websites that allow pornography are Twitter and Reddit. Formerly Tumblr allowed pornographic content on their social media site, but they decided to ban pornographic content from their website because Apple removed Tumblr from their app store. Stumbleupon also allowed adult content but they changed their concept and moved to a new domain called Mix.com.

Social media sites such as Facebook and pinterest have a strict non-adult material policy and will remove and close any user account that posted such materials, as it is stated in their terms of service.

Alternatively to social media sites are free user-generated collections of pornographic material that finance their server costs by displaying advertisement, thus allowing them to share their content as an alternative strategy to the social media sites.

Social porn news

There are other forms of Porn 2.0, which do not involve user-generated video content. One is so-called “Social Porn” Digg-style websites, where registered users write articles about their submitted links.

Over-saturation due to free promotional material

MET-Art which started in 1999 its success with free promotional maters created a a constant source of new material on the internet and pornographic video sharing websites. So there is an ever growing amount of free porno pictures and videos that are being made available and shared through social media like formerly Tumblr, Stumbleupon but still on Twitter. This created a whole new accecssibility for pornographic material.

In order to counter this growing movements, paysites adopted a strategy to offer higher quality with high resolution images and full length HD+ videos, but revenue continues to shrink.
